A Bay of Plenty political stoush is brewing as Tauranga Independent MP Brendan Horan accuses fellow National MPs Simon Bridges and Tony Ryall of 'throwing mud back” in Tauranga ratepayers' faces.
The Independent MP's comments come after the Rena's owners and insurers announced the submerged accommodation block of the wrecked ship will be cut from beneath the sea and removed from the Astrolabe Reef.
Tauranga Independent MP Brendan Horan is criticising Tauranga MP Simon Bridges of not listening to the Tauranga public.
'They haven't stepped up to the plate in regards to the Rena at all. Pretty soon we will be coming up to two years – and it's still there,” says Brendan.
When it grounded Brendan says the Government promised to hear submissions in support of removing the wreck from the reef, about 25km off the coast of Tauranga.
He firmly believes Simon and Tony are not listening to Tauranga residents, who he says are in favour of full removal of the Rena wreck, instead focussing on ministerial roles outside of the region.
Last weekend Brendan picked up handfuls of plastic beads along the Papamoa beach line, which he says illustrates his concerns.
'A Government order, which called on the ship owners to remove the vessel when it ran aground in October 2011, is still in force. Iwi groups and other locals are asking why the Government is now in discussion with the owners to leave much of the wreck on the reef.
'We now have two appointed Crown Ministers. Both were initially elected locally to represent the Tauranga district yet they seem to have lost touch with their responsibilities to our city and district.”
In the last month, Simon has attended receptions in Hamilton, Hawera and Kaikoura along with trips overseas. He visited the Olympic Park in London with health and safety experts; and while in Geneva attended the 102nd session of the International Labour Organisation Conference.
'I would like to see them do a little more focus on Tauranga.”
He is also accusing the MPs of continually failing to back-up promises made once elected. These include failing to adopt Route K in the State Highway Programme, and preventing power price hikes – currently 15 per cent above the national average.
'Route K – that should have been on the Government books for a long time. We have two ministers and it's still a noose around ratepayer's necks, with $10,000 in interest per day,” says Brendan.
'It's a cynical exercise at the expense of ratepayers. They will keep on going with it until it's close to the elections.
Simon rubbishes these claims saying he is proud to represent the Tauranga region on a daily basis – both in Parliament and around the community.
In the last week, Simon has attended numerous community events including last Friday's BNZ Bay of Plenty ExportNZ Awards and sitting down with iwi members to discuss Rena issues.
'That's the case pretty much each and every week. That's more than a lot of local MPs who aren't Cabinet ministers too,” says Simon.
'The fact of the matter is, given that Tony and I are Cabinet ministers, we can do a better job for the people of Tauranga than we would otherwise be able to do.
'Other than from Mr Horan, I never get that kind of feedback.”
Tony agrees with Simon saying Brendan is just 'politicking”.
'It is an honour to serve our region, and both Simon Bridges and I spend huge time and energy working for the people of the Bay of Plenty.”

But what has Brendan Horan done for Tauranga? I can't recall Brendan being so 'vocal' in the media before he chose to become an 'independant' MP. Yes, in my opinion, Brendan did choose to become an independent MP - he could of done the decent thing and stepped aside once he expelled from NZ First. But he gets a lot more money staying in there than he would on the dole!
More words

Brendan why don't you just be quiet and resign? You must have a huge ego to be so vocal and opinionated. Never heard anything from you before you were dumped by NZ First. You just seem to be trying to get political points. If you want to impress people actually do something positive instead of blowing a lot of hot air. Actions speak louder than words.
GET OUT AND STAY OUT

That is just dandy coming from an ex NZ First list MP never elected to an electorate seat and frankly should not still be in Parliament as any sort of MP. Mouthing off to score cheap purile political points fools nobody.
neither has credibility

We would be better off with neither of these two. 'Yes man' Bridges objects to telling us how his party is going to turn 85% of kiwis into second class citizens through the corrupt and biased Constitution Amendment panel, and Horan should have resigned when booted out of NZ First, but opted to fraudulently call himself an "independent". So since neither of them care for the people of Tauranga, their number one concern is...themselves.
But it's the taxpayers who will pay isn't it??

All very well for Brendan Horan on his large salary plus expenses to bleat on about removing the wreck. That would be great if those responsible paid for it. But I believe it would be us mug taxpayers that would fork out yet again. I'm opposed to MP travel excesses as well and a bit disappointed that Tony and Simon haven't cracked down on that, but what junkets did Brendan ever go on? The reality is that MPs don't do actually do anything for their city, they use our money to do what ever they do achieve. At least Tony Ryall and Simon Bridges were elected to parliament as local MPs and I think have more accountability than list MPs.
Come on Brendan!!

When did MP's ever listen to the people that put them where they are. The only thing they hear is the jingle of gold coins falling into their bank accounts. How cool is that you don't have to work for it or be answerable to your electorate all you have to do is get yourself elected and sit back while the money rolls in.
Rena

The Rena problem could have been easily fixed. They should have blown it up. Millions of tons of shipping was blown up and sunk during the last war and everywhere has recovered ok. Mother-nature is a great healer.
Will he take Notice of KwiSteve, The Sage, ROCCO and Capatain Sensible.

There are times in life where it is better to be quiet and fall on your sword. Brendon may have Tauranga at heart but we have not seen it yet. Personal attacks on fellow MP's has always been fair game, but what Tauranga wants is positive action and Tony Ryall has pushed our hospital and some people recognise this, but there will be others who will say different. But both Ryall and Bridges were elected and not on the list and jump off, or get pushed off. Brendon would be better to hang up his boots properly like any good player who has not been picked for the team.

Good to see one MP who isn't afraid to tell it like it is. Our elected MP is worse than our unelected one.

... to know which way the wind blows. Simon Bridges has worked tirelessly for Tauranga since long before he became a Cabinet Minister and has remained available to the Electorate ever since. Yes, there is cause for concern over the new Constitution, and it would be reassuring if it were much more transparent than has been the case, but whether you agree with Simon or not, it is good to know it is in honest, (and well legally qualified) hands. I have no personal knowledge of whether Tony works hard or not, so I make no comment on that. But Brendan has a track record which shows him singularly unqualified for public office. (NZ First were very happy to part company with him.) The sad thing about that is that he raises a valid point: The Rena IS still there and most people would rather it wasn't, route K is still a white elephant, and there is no good reason why Tauranga should be paying such higher than normal power prices. Maybe it is time our elected representatives DID do something about these things.
Brendan, who cares?..

There is nothing quite like someone with nothing to lose calling a spade a spade. Taking Simon and Tony to task for their poor attention to local issues is a bold step and may well serve to stir these two National Party poodles into thinking more about working for their electorates than just using them as smile and wave opportunities. Sure Brendan has some unresolved issues that need to be sorted once and for all but it is also commendable that he is still prepared to stand up on important local matters.
Wait for the Truth

Today (10/07/2013) Sunlive reports local iwi are appealing their "unfair treatment" by government over what happens with the Rena wreck. Defending criticism from Brendan Horan that our elected members of parliament are neglecting local issues Simon Bridges used a recent meeting with iwi as an example of his good work. In hindsight it would funny if it wasn't so farcical.
Brendan is good for the region

The value of independent MPs is that they can go to the heart of issues and keep party yes-men honest. Brendan doesn't have to do anything, he could sit back and loaf, but he is actually one of the hardest working MPs in Parliament and prepared to get into rucks that could go either way. Brendan also got stuck into kiwi rail's poor safety issues not so long ago. The man's heart is in Tauranga and this region only gets things done by fighters from left field. I say good on ya mate

I support what Brendan Horan is saying about the lack of action regarding the removal of the Rena wreck and the getting rid of the K road debt etc and am glad he spoke up and more people should, then we will see more action
