Footballers fundraise for Fiji

European footballing rivalries will be resurrected in fun filled spirit tonight in a fundraiser to send two Aquinas College students to Fiji for the colleges' annual service trip.

As part of their fundraising project to reach the Fijian village of Vanukula, Ben Regan and Connor Bourne have organised a night of football's finest highlight reel from the 2012/13 season, at Mumbai Masala.

Ben Regan and Connor Bourne get behind their English football teams ahead of the fundraising dinner tonight.

Each year the a group of Year 13 students embark on the service trip to the small village located inland of Suva helping construct new buildings and interacting with the Fijian people.

The 13 students involved in this year's trip have fundraised $20,000 for the building project, but now need the $2000 per individual to pay for travel and insurance costs.

Seventeen-year-olds Connor and Ben came up with the football inspired theme linking their English heritage with a recap of the English Premier League and Champions League seasons.

'We both support football teams and know lots of people around Papamoa who love their football and watch the Premier League and Champions League,” says Connor.

The themed curry night will include a football quiz, highlights of this season's European League, a bottle auction and raffle.

Connor, a staunch Birmingham City supporter, along with Ben a Nottingham Forest fan, play for the Aquinas Second XI and have been fundraising for the last six months for that will be a once in lifetime experience, says Connor.

'It will be the first time I have been to a different country and being the first time to help people is brilliant.”

The expected 30 guests are being invited to attend wearing football jerseys or their team's sporting colours.

'There will definitely be a lot of banter from everyone.”

There are five tickets left for the fundraising dinner starting at 7pm. Tickets are $35 dollars and can be purchased through Cathy on 021 1243968.
