Parents of St Mary's School students are being warned to be vigilant of a homeless man hanging around the school grounds.
A letter to parents says the man, who lives in his car, has been 'frequenting areas adjacent to the school” on 13th Avenue and in Harvey Street.
St Mary's School is urging parents to be vigilant with children after a homeless man has been hanging around the school on 13th Avenue.
The school is asking parents to ensure their children enter school grounds safely when dropped off in the morning, and are collected from within the school grounds at the end of the day.
The letter, signed by principal Ben Fuller and board of trustee chair Kelly Quin, says while the man is probably 'harmless” it is important to take precautions.
'We will be insisting that children wait within our school grounds to be collected and placing an additional teacher on duty after school.”
A trespass order has been issued against the man and he was asked by police to leave the Harvey Street car park outside the school last week.
The man lives in his silver 1996 Honda Legend, which has curtains on its windows.
Parent Catherine MacLoughlin says it is a reminder for everyone to be vigilant about stranger danger, and says younger children seem to have been particularly upset.
'Everybody knows each other and there is a nice safe feeling in the area so it's a bit of a wakeup.”

How there are multi million dollar church buildings in Tauranga (St Marys Catholic Church included), yet people are living in cars! What would Jesus do?

@ kiwisteve, this person choses to live like this. If he could ask Jesus for anything, it would probably be a bigger car to sleep in. I meet a guy like these people (a cousin to my partner) and he says none of them want to be associated with the so called SYSTEM (taxes etc) and say this way is the freedom they want. I said to him, oh! but you want us to provide yous with shelter, food and anything else you can get for free from the system. I told him to go get stuffed.

Nice one - you've truly stretched yourself by talking to one of, to use your words ‘these people'. Good thing you straightened him out, in his position as representative of all the others, because they are clearly all the same, and have all chosen to live ‘like this' and want you to provide them with everything. If only he'd met you earlier in life.

God has provided a fantastic place (Memorial Park) for this man and his car for at least the past 6 months. I hope he has been using the "facilities" the rate payers of Tauranga have provided for free!
