Horan’s vote set to ‘Mondayise’ NZ

New Zealanders could gain an extra public holiday when Anzac or Waitangi Day fall on a weekend as Labour's controversial ‘Mondayisation' Bill heads to its third and final reading in Parliament tonight.

The reading, to be held alongside the Marriage Amendment Bill tonight, will face its final vote after scraping through with 61 to 60 votes in the previous first and second readings thanks to Independent Tauranga MP Brendan Horan.

Independent MP Brendan will once again hold the swing vote in the ‘Mondayisation' Bill in its third and final reading in Parliament tonight.

Originally drafted by Labour deputy leader Grant Robertson and undertaken by MP David Clark, the Holidays (Full Recognition of Waitangi Day and Anzac Day) Amendment Bill is designed to give New Zealanders the Monday off work if Waitangi Day or Anzac Day falls on a weekend.

This Bill seeks to restore to New Zealanders their legislated 11 public holidays in every year, rather than only five of every seven years.

Brendan, who was previously the 61st vote, says he will continue to use his swing vote to get the bill across the line in what is a 'no brainer” for the country and the Bay of Plenty region.

'Before I went into Parliament I employed 15 people and had three retail outlets. I did the sums on what the day and the hours would cost, but then I went down to the Mount and saw the amount of people down there on the long weekend.

'It's the greater good that matters here and a long weekend is a great benefit to the Tauranga economy.”

Tauranga MP Simon Bridges, who has opposed the bill from the beginning, says he will continue to oppose the bill for a number of reasons. He says Anzac and Waitangi Day are special days in the New Zealand calendar rather than a chance for another holiday.

'One is when modern New Zealand was formed and the other to mark all the sacrifices New Zealanders made at war for our country.

'We just don't think they should be about just another holiday.”

He says at a time when the global economy is recovering from an economic recession the Government does not want to place extra costs on businesses.

'We think it's anti jobs. Creating holidays anyone can do that, but creating jobs is more difficult and that's the focus of the Government.”

Until now, Labour, Greens, Maori, Mana and United Future parties voted in favour of the bill while the National Party and Act voted against the bill.

The current Holidays Act 2003 decrees that New Zealanders have 11 public holidays. Six of these holidays can occur on any day of the week.

Section 45 of the Act protects four of these days as holidays if they fall on a weekend by 'Mondayising” them. The other two days, Waitangi Day and ANZAC Day, are not similarly protected.

If the bill becomes law tonight, New Zealanders will have to wait until 2015 for the next holiday to coincide with the weekend.

Still calling yourself an "independent" I see. Question; How many votes did you get Brendan? Answer; None.

ANZAC and Waitangi Days will NOT just become ordinary days. They will still be observed on the correct day they fall. What this will do is celebrate the two most significant days in this countries history with a public holiday on Monday if the day falls on the weekend. Most of the other legislated holidays are Christian festival observance. As a NZ'er who was born 56 years ago I have always felt ANZAC and Waitangi should have been Mondayized. Like I have said they are fundamental days in this countries written history. If the days the various canoes arrived can be identified then they should also be added to the list.
