Bay court staff strike

Tauranga Ministry of Justice employee Trevor Philips joined his colleagues outside the Tauranga Courthouse on Monday for the group's first protest of the New Year.
Ministry staff at the courthouse, who are members of the Public Service Association, have carried out random strike action and protests over the past few months.

PSA delegate Trevor Philips protests with other Ministry of Justice employees during a rally outside the Tauranga Courthouse at midday on Monday.

They are demanding a wage increase from the ministry, but pay talks between the two parties broke down late last year.
The group were also supporting a large PSA protest in Wellington at the official opening the Supreme Court.
PSA members also walked off the job for the rest of Monday afternoon.
Trevor, a court attendant at Tauranga Courthouse, says PSA members will continue taking industrial action until their demands are met.
'We have had negotiation talks and it's just come to nothing.
'A lot of us work in court and when we are not in the court, we have to be replaced and if they can't find staff to replace us, the court has to close.”
PSA members from all over the country arrived in Wellington to protest their pay concerns during the official opening of the Supreme Court.
'These workers are holding a peaceful rally during the opening of the new Supreme Court to highlight that they're underpaid for running something as essential as our justice system,” says PSA national secretary Richard Wagstaff.
Trevor says the job many staff undertake at the Tauranga Courthouse is worth far more than what they are currently paid.
'We want parity with the other public service salaries and we are taking industrial action to get that point across.”
