Mount Primary top school

Mount Maunganui Primary School is Tauranga's Top School for 2013 after winning the 13th annual competition at Gate Pa School yesterday.

On March 17 the Mount team battled it out against 24 other schools to claim the championship title for the first time winning four out of the seven events of the day.

Mount Maunganui Primary School principal Damien Harris is proud of the team's efforts.

'We are all rather stoked to have the trophy in our foyer.”

Maungatapu Primary School were awarded second place, with Gate Pa School winning third place.

Coached by senior syndicate teachers Rodd Kingston Smith, Anita Styles and David Plane, the Mount team trained for several weeks ahead of competition day.

Rodd says the children were very self-motivated even asking for extra trainings to be scheduled.

'Our kids are still buzzing and are excited about our assembly this afternoon where we present the trophy to the whole school.”

Schools enter a team of 12 to compete in activities including the Leaky Bucket game, where students take turns to slide down a slippery slide while at the same time trying not to lose any water from a leaking bucket. Other games include the magic carpet ride, big foot and the horizontal bungy.

The event is a fundraiser for Gate Pa School.

Congratulations Mount Primary and also to Gate Pa for another outstanding contest. It's become an iconic event for our local Primary Schools.

So really great to some some normal happy healthy kids in the BOP- so much is written about and reported on the hungry- beaten-neglected- etc etc kids of the area who are Trouble- gluesniffing taggers ( and there sure are some of those too)that we forget that the vast majority are just like we used to be- NORMAL HAPPY and HEALTHY attending school and getting on with being a kid :)

Yes it is great to see these schools encouraging sportsmanship, fairplay and having fun. We attended Paengaroa Schools Top School Competition again this year, also on the same day. Apparently Paengaroa School were the first ever school in the Western Bay to host this competition back in 1999 and it is still going strong. It was extremely well organised, the food was wonderful and we really enjoyed the day, and the rain. Well done.
