Tauranga MP Simon Bridges has learned he is no da Vinci after trying out his artistic talents for charity.
He has painted a work that combines elements of Wellington and Tauranga in the style he calls "naïve".
"I'm working in the naïve tradition, which effectively is childlike," says Simon.
"I accept I am not a natural born artist, but I am enthusiastic."
The work took Simon several hours to complete and will be auctioned to raise funds for KiwiCan through the Rotary Club of Tauranga Sunrise organised Treasured Art exhibition.
The final version of the work will have an added extra, which Simon is keeping quiet about.
"A special surprise is to go with it - a finishing touch involving paste and scissors. It's going to be huge."
This is the second time this year Simon has tested his artistry.
Tauranga MP Simon Bridges says he is working in the "naïve tradition".
"The last time was when I was down in Wanaka at the start of the year at the Wanaka A&P Show.
"It was for a primary school fundraiser with a 10 second doodle in vivid."
This work was later sold on TradeMe for $120.
"As opposed to 15 seconds'ish, this took hours and a huge amount of effort - I want to raise more than $120 for this one."
All money raised will go to KiwiCan. It is a foundation for youth development that aims to boost children's self-esteem, based on teaching life skills and values that will help them have the confidence to make good decisions.
The auction is at Ingham-Sears Autohaus on Totara Street, Mount Maunganui, on June 24 and has more than 50 works for sale, including 19 from Tauranga's Dame Joy Drayton.
