Rest home quality assured

Minister of Health Tony Ryall is moving to assure the New Zealand public of the quality in rest homes across the country.

Tony Ryall says there will be improved rest home quality as a result of tighter auditing rules.
He recently announced tighter rules for rest home auditors, who will now have to be accredited by an international agency.
Tony believes it was important to "tidy up" the industry because the public were becoming increasingly concerned about rest home quality.
Previously rest homes had a week's notice to prepare for auditors, but Tony says new rules enable spot checks.
There are about 16 rest homes in Tauranga and roughly 30 across the Western Bay and Whakatane regions.
He talks on camera to SunLive about the tighter rules and explains why it is so important the government acted.
