Anti-bullying no illusion

As a young boy magician Greg Britt witnessed bullying in his school and decided he wanted to make it disappear – now he can.

The award winning magician known as Elgregoe has become one of New Zealand's top school performers, having performed to more than 700,000 students and this week visited the Bay of Plenty to promote the anti–bullying message.

The idea to eliminate bullying from schools started 15 years ago when a school principal told Elgregoe if he was a real magician he would be able to make bullying disappear.

He is now touring schools around the country promoting his anti-bullying message.

'It's good that I can now empower other kids to do things about it.”

Although the magic might be an illusion Elgregoe says the message is very real.

'I never tire of doing the school shows, students love the show and the teachers love the message reinforcing the anti-bullying message in a different and memorable way.”

Elgregoe visited Lake Rerewhakaitu School and Welcome Bay School on Wednesday before heading to Papamoa School and Gate Pa School yesterday and today he will visit Fairhaven School and Te Puke Intermediate to present his show ‘You've Got the Power' educating children on key values.

Supporting the 2013 school curriculum, his show aims to challenge students to create caring communities, build good relationships and make a positive contribution to their school.

The 2013 show, supported by TrustPower, is themed around being a hero at school.

TrustPower community relations co-ordinator Suzi Luff says Elgregoe delivers a serious message in a fun way.

'TrustPower is proud to support this anti-bullying programme as it really connects with students and empowers them to make the right choices.

'Feedback from schools is that his message is getting through and making a real difference.”

Elgregoe, and his wife Sue, use tricks, puppets, ventriloquism, music, songs and a variety of props, including live birds, to portray his anti-bullying messages.

Special guests this year include Seymour the dinosaur, Zazu the great macaw parrot and Baxter the live rabbit.

In 2009 Queen Elizabeth appointed Elgregoe with a Member of the NZ Order of Merit for services to education.

In the same year Elgregoe received The Variety Artists Club of New Zealand's Top Children's Entertainer Award and one of the highest forms of recognition a New Zealand magician can receive - The Grand Master of Magic Award.
