Tu Meke dance boost for Bethlehem

Students at Bethlehem College enjoyed some light relief to mark the start of the new school year yesterday with a performance by New Zealand's Got Talent finalists JGeeks.

The four performers gave a traditional Maori style dance show with a twist to hundreds of students and their teachers at the college.

The stop was part of a nationwide tour for Marino Taiatini, Eru Bennet-Paul, Tawaroa Kawana and Jermaine Leef – who have been performing at venues around the country after finishing in the finals of the reality television series last December.

The performance comes after weeks of mourning for the college who lost three of its community members in a tragic car crash in Kenya.

Lead dancer Jermaine says the group was happy to bring something positive to the college during its difficult time.

'Obviously they have gone through a lot this year already. We just wanted to share some arōha and bring them some JGeek flavour bringing some of our style in to the school.

'It's something a bit positive bringing some smiles on their faces and we try to destract them and give them something to smile about.”

Tauranga anesthetist Brian Johnston and his wife Grace, along with 19-year-old Caitlin Dickson and Kenyan man Christopher Mmata were killed in the mini-van crash in western Kenya earlier this month.

The three tauranga people were part of a group of 19 volunteers working with the Ark Quest Academy in Kenya, organised by the college.

The four performers are currently on a ‘JGeeks Tu Meke Tour' visiting 36 locations around New Zealand.

'We want to take our live show to Aotearoa.

'Basically we take traditional Māori style and we fuse it with modern day entertainment. It's taking a lot of like electronic music and putting that Māori spin on it.

'We've all travelled around the world and we've all grown up Māori and we've lived in the modern day world. We are modern Māori music entertainers and that's what we're trying to share with the world.

'We want to share Māori culture but we want to do it in a modern way.”

Jermaine says the JGeeks Tu Meke Tour shows have been sell-out crowds so far.

The crew then performed at Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre last night and will perform in Whakatane tomorrow. For a full list of tour dates visit http://www.eventfinder.co.nz/2013/jgeeks-tu-meke-tour
