Clean-up work is set to begin at the Mount Hot Pools site this week.

In a post on its website, the Mount Hot Pools team said people may notice some activity on site this week as clean-up work begins in the car park area.

“Just to be clear: this doesn’t mean we are reopening soon, but it is a welcome bit of progress,” the post reads.

The pools were shut following the January Mauao landslides, which claimed the lives of six people and led to exclusion zones being established around the site.

The clean-up work is expected to take several days and will be carried out during daylight hours between 8am and 5pm.

Nearby residents and businesses may hear additional noise from machinery and vehicles, although the work is not expected to affect traffic or access to Adams Ave.

The team said the families affected by the January tragedy remained front of mind and the work would be undertaken with care and respect due to the site’s sensitive nature.

“Strict health and safety measures will be in place, including daily site checks, specialist monitoring and procedures to halt work if weather conditions, ground movement or other safety risks emerge.”

When will the hot pools reopen?

In the post on its website, Mount Hot Pools said decisions about the future of the Mount Hot Pools would be influenced by ongoing geotechnical risk assessments being carried out on Mauao and surrounding areas.

It said the findings would help determine what can safely happen at the site in future, including any remediation work and the potential reopening of the popular facility.

While the pools remain closed, members of the Mount Hot Pools team have been redeployed across other Bay Venues facilities, including Baywave.

No timeline has been given for the reopening of the Mount Hot Pools.
