A group of 10 people who became lost in the Rotoehu Forest overnight have been located safe and well, police say.

Sergeant Shane Forsyth said police received reports that the group, travelling in vehicles, had become stranded in the forest at 1.20am today.

He said four members of the group made their way out on foot to seek help for the remaining six people who stayed with the vehicles.

At 10.20am, police walked into the forest and found the six stranded people.

Forsyth said the group was in good spirits and had enough supplies to remain comfortable.

The six people have chosen to stay with their vehicles and make alternative arrangements, and no longer require police assistance.

He said there are no concerns for their welfare at this time.
