Motorists travelling through Tauranga’s Ngātai and Bureta roads will face a series of overnight road closures.

Night works to complete final resurfacing and line marking on Bureta Rd will begin on Sunday as part of the Ngātai/Bureta Rd intersection safety improvements project, Tauranga City Council said in a media release.

Further night works are scheduled for September 24 and October 1, followed by five consecutive nights from October 4 to complete resurfacing and line marking on Ngātai Rd.

The intersection will be fully closed between 8pm and 6am on each of the work nights, with detours in place. The Bureta shops will remain open and accessible throughout the works.

Project managers say some noise and vibration are expected, although efforts will be made to minimise disruption for residents and businesses.

Construction of a new roundabout and traffic islands is already underway at the intersection.

To allow the works to be completed safely, temporary traffic management will also be in place on Ngātai Rd, including a stop/go operation during off-peak hours from 9am to 3pm.

While the stop/go system is operating, there will be no access between Ngātai Rd and either side of Bureta Rd. Signposted detours will be available for affected motorists.

Light vehicles will be diverted via Short St, Freyberg St, Landscape Rd and Vale St, while heavy vehicles will be directed along Vale St, Grange Rd, Ōtūmoetai Rd and Ngātai Rd.

Access to Kulim Ave will be maintained via Maxwells Rd and Harbour Dr.

The upgrade aims to improve safety and traffic flow at one of Tauranga’s busiest intersections.
