Motorists travelling through the Waioweka Gorge are being warned to expect short delays over the next two days as crews work to stabilise a slip site on State Highway 2.
New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said the highway is currently reduced to one lane under stop/go traffic management at a site about 3km south of the Goldsmith Slip following a slip on Sunday.
Crews will be at the site today and tomorrow inspecting the slip face, carrying out rock scaling and making the area safer for workers, the agency said.
The work will require short periods of stop/stop traffic management of up to 10 minutes at a time between 7am and 5pm on both days.
Outside those hours, stop/go traffic management will remain in place.
Once the slip face has been made safe, crews will begin clearing remaining debris from the road and work towards reopening both lanes.
NZTA said it expects to confirm a timeframe for reopening the highway to two lanes in the coming days, with work subject to weather conditions.
