Rising costs force AvoFest break until 2028

Rising costs and economic pressures have forced Katikati’s popular AvoFest to take a year-long break in 2027, with organisers planning a “refreshed and revitalised” return in 2028.

Trevor Burgess, chair of the Katikati FunFest Charitable Trust, said the decision not to hold a festival next year was not taken lightly and was made after looking at several alternatives.

“The festival sector in New Zealand is very challenging at present, as demonstrated by the cancellation or closure of several major events around the country.

“AvoFest has become an annual event valued by both the local community and visitors, and we recognise the disappointment this break may cause.”

However, Burgess said the costs of delivering a successful event had risen significantly.

“At the same time, ongoing economic pressures are creating additional challenges for community events, sponsors, businesses and organisers.

“An important factor in the decision was also the inability to agree on a management contract that would provide a sustainable way to address those increasing costs and financial pressures.”

He said while the break was disappointing, the trust believed it was the “responsible decision” to protect AvoFest’s long-term future.

“We want AvoFest to continue for many years to come rather than compromise its future by attempting to deliver the event under increasingly difficult financial and management conditions.”

The 2027 pause would allow organisers to review the event and consider how AvoFest could best serve Katikati and the wider community going forward.

Burgess said the trust would review the festival’s format, management, funding, partnerships and activities, aiming to create a sustainable and exciting AvoFest for the future.

The plans were to bring the AvoFest back in 2028, with the chance to “refresh and revitalise” the event while retaining elements that make it a “much-loved” part of the Katikati calendar.

“The organisers thank the many volunteers, sponsors, local businesses, community organisations, performers, suppliers and supporters who have contributed to AvoFest over the years.

“Their involvement has been fundamental to AvoFest’s success, and we hope they will join us again in 2028 ... we will be working hard to be back in 2028.”

Burgess said more information about AvoFest’s future would be shared as it developed.
