A person has died after being run over by a vehicle in Te Puke last night.

The crash happened just after 9pm on Te Puke Highway, close to Manoeka Rd, on the outskirts of the western Bay of Plenty town, police said.

The road was closed for several hours and has now reopened.

Police inquiries into the circumstances of the crash remain ongoing.

A Hato Hone St John spokesman said it sent an ambulance, rapid response unit and operations manager to the crash.
