Bay of Plenty police are warning residents to be vigilant when buying firewood online after becoming aware of multiple scams.

In a post to social media, police said sellers were advertising firewood, taking payment, and then failing to deliver the wood.

“Police are aware of multiple Facebook Marketplace scams involving sellers who are advertising firewood with no intention of following through with the deal,” the post read.

Police have urged buyers to be “cautious” of sellers who require full payment before delivery and to take steps to verify who they are dealing with.

Police recommended using reputable online buying and selling platforms, checking sellers’ social media profiles for signs they may be fake, and ensuring the name on a bank account matches the name on the profile.

“Be cautious if you’re meeting the seller in person, take precautions where possible,” the post said.

“Equally, if purchasers are reluctant to meet in person or insist items are dropped off at a location, they may be avoiding being seen or identified.”

Police said cash can be a safe alternative for pick-up-and-pay transactions and to look out for buyers or sellers who are in a rush to complete a transaction.

“As the saying goes, if it is too good to be true, it probably is.”

Anyone who believes they have been the victim of a social media scam can contact police through 105 or report it online.

Information can also be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
