A large mural featuring Tauranga landmarks has been added to the city centre.

Harmonise by Tauranga artist Sarah Cornish, also known as The Lazy Mermaid, has been completed at the old TV3 site on the corner of Durham St and Wharf St.

The 160sq m artwork is the latest addition to Tauranga’s City Art Walk, a digital guide showcasing more than 30 public artworks.

The mural explores the relationship between Tauranga’s urban spaces and natural environment.

Cornish has incorporated local landmarks, including Mauao, Matakana Island, The Elms, Matapihi Bridge, the Spring St spring and Baycourt.

Completed over 14 days, the mural features framed windows designed to encourage people to take a closer look at familiar local scenes.

Annie Hill, strategy and capability lead for Creative Bay of Plenty – which commissioned the work – said: “Public art transforms everyday spaces into places of connection, curiosity and pride, and Harmonise beautifully celebrates the identity of our city”.

The City Art Walk website highlights murals, sculptures, lightworks and Māori carving between Second Ave and Hamilton St.

Developed for Tauranga City Council by Supercut Projects, with support from Cooney Lees Morgan and Creative New Zealand, it allows users to learn more about the artworks and artists.

The City Art Walk website can be accessed at cityartwalktga.stqry.app.
