When most people think about injuries, they picture sports fields, busy roads, or workplace accidents.

“However, ACC’s Injuries in New Zealand: Insights from 2025 reveals a surprising reality: 50% of injuries occur in and around the home,” Habit Health’s lead physiotherapist for Bay of Plenty, Ayden Reynolds, says.

“From gardening and DIY projects to lifting heavy items, cleaning, and everyday slips, trips, and falls, many injuries happen while carrying out routine tasks.”

As spring approaches, Habit Health is giving this timely reminder to Tauranga residents who begin to prepare gardens, tackle home improvement projects, spring clean their households and make the most of finer weather.

“The local team at Habit Health sees the impact of these injuries every day. Common presentations include back pain, shoulder strains, sprained ankles, knee injuries, and mobility issues that can affect work, recreation, and independence,” Reynolds said.

“The good news is many injuries are preventable. Maintaining strength and balance, warming up before physical tasks, using proper lifting techniques, and seeking help early when pain develops can all reduce the risk of longer-term problems.”

Habit Health’s Bay of Plenty team is proud to support locals through physiotherapy and rehabilitation in their local clinics at Bayfair, Aspire in Bethlehem, Tauranga’s Marsh St and Katikati, Reynolds said.
