A high-voltage line trip left 933 properties across Welcome Bay without power on Monday evening, with CCTV footage capturing bright flashes in the sky around the same time.
Powerco said the outage began at 7.09pm.
A spokesperson said the outage occurred when a high-voltage line tripped.
“Power was gradually restored to customers throughout the evening, with the last customers reconnected at 9.09pm.”
The company said a field crew patrolled the affected line but was unable to determine what caused the trip.
CCTV footage sent to SunLive shows two bright flashes lighting up the sky over Welcome Bay around the same time as the outage.
A Welcome Bay resident who recorded the footage said the flashes appeared to come from the southwest area of the suburb.

A Welcome Bay resident recorded two distinct flashes seconds apart, which appeared to come from the suburb’s southwest.
“Looks like there has been some serious power outage,” the resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said.
“My best guess is that it was the Powerco Welcome Bay Substation and their power lines, as our camera is facing that direction.”
Residents across several Tauranga suburbs, including Ohauiti, Pyes Pa and The Lakes, reported power cuts and flickering lights.
One Ohauiti resident said her power briefly went out before returning moments later.
She said she heard an unusual noise coming from the home’s power meter.
“We thought a fuse had blown or something. But when we checked, everything was fine.”
While Powerco has confirmed the outage was caused by a high-voltage line trip, the cause of the fault has not been identified.
