Brendan thanks outgoing Speaker

Tauranga Independent list MP Brendan Horan thanked outgoing Speaker of the House Lockwood Smith today for his handling of the MP's recent change of status in Parliament.

Referring to his being kicked out of New Zealand First and continuing as an independent MP, Brendan says he may have more reason than other MPs for thanking Lockwood Smith.

'Thank you for protecting not only me, but for the very human face and care you accorded my wife and children at a time of great difficulty and sadness for my family,” says Brendan.

David Carter was nominated by Prime Minister John Key for the vacancy created by Lockwood Smith's resignation.

Labour nominated Trevor Mallard, Brendan Horan unsuccessfully requested a secret ballot while his previous party leader Winston Peters unsuccessfully requested a one hour debate on the issue.

The final vote shows Carter won by 10 votes. He got 62 to Mallard's 52.

National won the vote with Carter taking the spot by 10 votes at 62 to Mallard's 52.

Prime Minister John Key today congratulated him on his selection.

'It's fitting that David Carter, who has served as an MP since 1994 and who has held a number of ministerial and parliamentary roles, has been elevated to the highest office elected by the House.

'David's 19 years of experience, and his deep understanding of parliamentary procedure, will serve MPs well, and will stand him in good stead, during his tenure as Speaker.

'He has been a hard-working and high-achieving Minister, and I have greatly valued his contribution for the past four years,” says the Prime Minister.

Mr Carter is replacing Rt Hon Lockwood Smith, who has been nominated as New Zealand's next High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.

Resign NOW. You were a list MP that is now no longer attached to the party you got in on. You are NOT, I repeat NOT, an "independent" MP. You are a disgrace and embarrassment to Maori and this electorate.

still there?

Brendan, are you still there? We are not fools. You should not be in Parliament. You were a list MP with NZ First. You have been expelled from NZ First, so why are you still in Parliament??? Please resign now.

Don't get it

It seems if you have a big personality you can get into politics. 'Great difficulty and sadness that we have suffered' - what did someone die. Brendon if you just did something for BOP/NZ, maybe you would gain some respect and fairly earn the money you'll getting.
