New Zealand’s top surf lifesaving athletes have been named for the 2026 Black Fins team.

The squad will represent the country at the Lifesaving World Championships in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, in December.

Held every two years, the championships will see the Black Fins compete against the world’s best in beach, ocean and pool events.

In a statement, Black Fins campaign lead Steve Kent said selection in the national team reflected years of hard work and dedication.

“Congratulations to every athlete selected. Representing New Zealand as a Black Fin is a huge honour and recognition of years of hard work.

“We’ve got an incredibly talented team with a great mix of experience and emerging talent, and we’re looking forward to seeing them take on the world’s best later this year.”

Kent said the championships required athletes capable of performing across multiple disciplines under pressure over an intense competition schedule.

“Worlds is an intense four-day campaign and demands athletes who can adapt, combine strengths, and deliver when it matters most.

“The Black Fins have a strong mix of experience and fresh talent, and younger athletes pushing the more experienced athletes is exactly what lifts the whole squad.”

Kent said New Zealand heads into the event after another strong domestic season and recent international success, with Australia and the host nation, South Africa, expected to be among its biggest challengers.

The team will spend the coming months preparing for the championships, including a performance camp on the Gold Coast in October.
