An internationally acclaimed Canadian circus act will make its New Zealand debut at this year’s Tauranga Arts Festival.

Machine de Cirque has been confirmed as the latest headline addition.

Festival artistic director Megan Brown said securing Machine de Cirque is a major win for the city; four Baycourt performances are scheduled as part of the October 22 to November 1 festival programme.

The announcement follows last month’s reveal of opening act Macy Gray, whose Baycourt show sold out within 15 minutes of tickets going on general release, underscoring strong early demand for the festival.

Machine de Cirque has toured globally and is known for blending contemporary circus with live music and theatrical performance. The production features five performers who combine physical skill with comedy, using props including a teeterboard, juggling clubs and a drum kit.

Audiences can expect a mix of acrobatics, trapeze, juggling and fast-paced choreography. The family-friendly show is described as an “exhilarating” fusion of physical feats, humour and storytelling.

The production follows a narrative in which five isolated characters attempt to reconnect with the outside world using a mysterious machine, resulting in a series of imaginative and high-risk scenarios.

Brown said last year’s Cirque Bon Bon shows proved Tauranga audiences have a strong appetite for circus performances, as all four shows sold out.

“Machine de Cirque is very different yet also offers plenty to delight,” she said.

The troupe will perform at Baycourt on October 23 at 6pm, October 24 at 3pm and 7.30pm, and October 25 at 1pm.

Tickets, from $60 to $85, with a family pass available, are on sale through Eventfinda, the Baycourt Box Office and the Tauranga Arts Festival website.
