Mount Maunganui have snatched a dramatic one-point win over Tauranga Sports in a pulsating top-of-the-table Baywide Premier clash at Tauranga Domain.

In a match dubbed the “Battle of the Bridge”, the visitors secured a 27-26 victory after Monty Parkinson calmly slotted a last-gasp penalty in front of the posts, moments after an earlier attempt rebounded off the upright in injury time.

The result avenged Mount Maunganui’s narrow round four loss – also by a single point – and handed Tauranga Sports their first defeat of the season.

Tauranga Sports dominated the opening half, running in four tries to take a commanding 26-7 lead into the break.

However, Mount Maunganui staged a determined second-half comeback, keeping the home side scoreless while chipping away at the deficit before earning a late penalty opportunity under intense pressure.

After a missed attempt stayed in play, sustained attack forced a further infringement, giving Parkinson a second chance – which he converted to seal the win as fulltime sounded.

The victory also ended Tauranga Sports’ hold on the Jordan Cup challenge trophy.

Elsewhere, Greerton Marist and Te Puke Sports strengthened their positions in the top four with away wins.

Te Puke claimed a bonus-point 33-7 victory over Te Puna, while Greerton Marist defeated Whakarewarewa.

In the Baywide Development competition, Tauranga Sports retained top spot following a high-scoring 63-48 win over Mount Maunganui.

Te Puna joined Mount and Greerton Marist in a three-way tie for second after beating Te Puke Sports 24-15, while Greerton Marist edged Whakarewarewa 37-29.

Eastern Districts continued their late-season resurgence in the Western Bay of Plenty Championship, upsetting Katikati 25-24, with Rangataua and Arataki also recording wins.
