Tauranga Sports fight back to keep streak alive

Tauranga Sports have held firm at the top of the Baywide Premier competition, surviving a stern challenge from Te Puna to maintain their unbeaten run in round nine.

Playing at Maramatanga Park, Te Puna made the early running and led 8-0 at halftime, putting the competition leaders under rare pressure. However, Tauranga Sports responded in the second spell with three converted tries to secure a 27-18 comeback victory.

Despite the loss, Te Puna delivered one of their strongest performances of the season, with lock Blake Vrieze named player of the match and centre Joe Weber also impressing.

The win sees Tauranga Sports retain the Jordan Cup challenge trophy, which will be on the line again next week when they host Te Puke Sports at Tauranga Domain.

In other Premier matches, Mount Maunganui strengthened their hold on second place with a 26-18 win over Te Puke Sports. The Mount led 26-6 with 10 minutes remaining before the visitors rallied late with tries in the 74th and 79th minutes.

Greerton Marist climbed into third on the standings after a dominant 38-16 victory against Ōpōtiki at Greerton Park. Joe Key opened the scoring early, with the hosts building a 26-6 halftime lead before adding two further tries after the break.

In the development grade, Te Puna turned the tables on Tauranga Sports after suffering a heavy defeat earlier in the season, claiming a narrow 23-17 win, thanks largely to accurate goalkicking. Mount Maunganui edged Te Puke Sports 26-21, while Greerton Marist beat Ōpōtiki 50-15.

The Colts/Under-85kg competition produced one-sided results, with Tauranga Sports defeating Greerton Marist 58-0 and Mount Maunganui overwhelming Taupō 80-5.

In the Western Bay championship, Arataki beat Papamoa 40-5, while competition leaders Katikati continued their strong form with a 50-19 win over Judea.

Baywide Premier standings (provisional): Tauranga Sports 38, Mount Maunganui 34, Greerton Marist 23, Te Puke Sports 21, Te Puna 13, Ōpōtiki 6, Whakarewarewa 5.
