Winter roadworks: Drivers warned to expect delays

People driving around the Bay of Plenty are being warned to expect delays as roadworks continue through the winter months.

New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said that while resealing and large rebuilds were less viable through winter, crews were focused on key safety jobs, including clearing drains in flood-prone areas, removing vegetation and litter, and repairing potholes.

NZTA said in a statement that winter can bring unexpected disruptions such as slips and flooding, with crews often responding in difficult conditions to reopen roads and restore safe travel as quickly as possible.

“With shorter daylight hours, road crews may still be working into the evening, so if you’re driving at night, keep an eye out, follow traffic management signs, slow down in wet conditions, leave a bit of extra following distance, and give your tyres and wipers a quick check before heading off.”

Meanwhile, a number of projects were planned or underway across Tauranga and the wider Western Bay.

Closures were scheduled in early June along State Highway 2 and SH29 around Takitimu Drive and Tauriko for major construction, with detours and delays expected.

Night works were also set to begin at Ōmanawa Bridge, while ongoing works continue through Tauriko village, including upgrades to stormwater infrastructure and water mains.

Elsewhere, Poripori Rd remains closed for slip repairs until early July, and reduced speed limits and lane changes remain in place across several sites linked to the Takitimu North Link project.

NZTA said weather may impact scheduling, and drivers were encouraged to check the latest conditions before travelling.
