Tauranga Sports edged Mount Maunganui by a single point in a gripping Baywide Premier clash between two of the competition’s most dominant clubs.

The showdown between Tauranga Sports (9) and Mount Maunganui (6) – sides that have collectively won close to half of the Baywide Premier titles since 1990 – lived up to its billing as a classic arm‑wrestle, finishing 18‑17 to the hosts.

Scores were locked at 10‑all at halftime after an intensely contested opening spell, with little separating the long‑time rivals.

Mount Maunganui crossed the try line three times to Tauranga Sports’ two, but the accuracy of Tauranga Sports kicker Riley Forbes proved decisive. Forbes added two penalty goals and a conversion, providing the crucial margin in a tense finish.

Mount Maunganui’s tries came from flanker Jack Gallon, who scored a double, and centre Siokatane Langilangi. Tauranga Sports’ five‑pointers were scored by prop Toby Taylor and Vishal Toi Toi.

Taylor capped off an outstanding performance by being named player of the match, an honour selected by a dedicated group of long‑time Tauranga Sports supporters.

At Murray Salt Stadium, Te Puke Sports claimed the maximum five competition points with a dominant 64‑7 victory over Te Puna, crossing for 10 tries. Cole Forbes led the charge with a hat‑trick, while Aaron Gibbs added a try and seven successful conversions.

Greerton Marist also made a statement, defeating defending Baywide champions Whakarewarewa 31‑13 in their return to Greerton Park.

In Baywide Development action, Tauranga Sports moved to the outright lead on the ladder after beating Mount Maunganui 22‑7 in one of the Blake Park curtain‑raisers. Te Puke Sports Development ran out 69‑19 winners over Te Puna in a high‑scoring contest, while Greerton Marist defeated Whakarewarewa 27‑10.

In BOPRU Colts and Under‑85kg results, Mount Maunganui edged Tauranga Sports 36‑31, while Te Puke Sports recorded a convincing 43‑17 win over Taupō.

In the WBOPRS Championship, Katikati extended their unbeaten run to four matches with a 48‑22 victory over Eastern Districts. Rangataua were also in commanding form, beating Pāpāmoa 52‑12. No final result was posted for the Arataki v Rangiuru fixture.
