State Highway 29 is closed following a serious crash involving a truck in Lower Kaimai, in the Western Bay of Plenty.
Emergency services were called around 5.50am to the two-vehicle crash, which happened near the intersection with Valley View Rd.
“Initial indications suggest there are serious injuries,” police said in a statement.
The road is closed while emergency services are at the scene.
Fire and Emergency northern shift manager Paul Radden said a car and a truck had crashed and two fire crews, from Greerton and Tauranga City, were attending.
The NZ Transport Agency said SH29 was closed between SH28 and Poripori Rd until further notice, and motorists should allow extra time.
The detour route for westbound traffic is as follows:
From SH29 turn right onto SH28, turn left onto SH5, turn left to continue onto SH36, turn right onto Taui St, turn left onto Wikaraka St, turn left to stay on Wikaraka St, turn right onto SH36, continue straight to rejoin SH29.
Eastbound traffic should follow the above route in reverse.
Kaimai School
Kaimai School on SH29 said the closure is affecting its staff.
In a post on its Facebook page, the school said: “We’re aware that SH 29 is currently closed after a crash near Valley View Road this morning. This may impact staff ability to get to school and school buses. We will keep you updated as we know more.”
