Average-speed safety cameras will soon be switched on across parts of Waikato and the Bay of Plenty.
In late April, a new set of cameras is expected to become operational on State Highway 2 east of Pōkeno in Waikato, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said in a Facebook post.
Two additional sets are planned for activation in May across the Bay of Plenty – one on State Highway 5 just south of Rotorua, and another on State Highway 2 west of Matatā near Whakatāne.
Unlike traditional speed cameras that capture a vehicle’s speed at a single point, average-speed safety cameras measure how long it takes a vehicle to travel between two or more cameras installed along a stretch of road, NZTA said.
“The system records the time a vehicle passes the first camera and the time it passes the next, calculating the average speed over the distance travelled.
“Drivers whose average speed exceeds the posted speed limit can expect to receive a fine.”
NZTA said the aim was not to catch drivers out, but to reduce the number of people travelling over the speed limit and to lower the risk of serious or fatal crashes.
The roading agency said clear signage would be installed before each camera zone, alerting drivers well in advance that average-speed cameras are in use.
Drivers who maintained speeds at or below the limit would not be fined.
More information about the safety cameras, how speeds are calculated, and how locations are chosen is available on the NZTA Waka Kotahi website.

Revenue gathering

This will do nothing for safety. It's another way to tax us on top of all the tolls ,fuel tax, rates. We're at breaking point already.
Just another tax

Its a tax and revenue generator plain and simple.
You think we have enough toll roads vs rest of nz ?

Easy way to avoid this "tax" and "revenue gathering" as you call it - SIMPLY DON'T SPEED! Follow the road rules and you'll have no problem
That will be unfair 😒

The state highway speed limit are supposed to the same everywhere first. There are so many different speed limits on each highway. Why don't the NZTA first replace national speed limit to a set limit of 100km/h permanently. We currently have 110, 100,90,80,70,60,50,40,30 &20. So how are people supposed to be driving sensibly when one overly cautious driver decides to do 60 in 100, 90, 80 zone. The people who pass them would get fines but the ones who are holding the traffic won't. I feel first give all the kiwis 2 speed to work with, 100km on open state highway and 50 in suburban area. School active zone with their recommended 20 or whatever the zone decides while the school hours are in place. Then by all means put 1000s of cameras everywhere and pick up people who don't follow the rules. This is just entrapment otherwise.
This is entrapment

I feel NZTA and government are using this to collect money for what really.
Currently we have 110,100,90,80,70,60,50,40,30 on most of the state highways. Why don't they change the speed limit to only 100 & 50. Operating school hours should be whatever zones decides for their area.
Currently drivers get frustrated with overly cautious drivers, then constant road blocks, road works, and now speed cameras. That's unfair for the people who have to travel a long distance for work. Reducing speed limit means less family time, more frustration and more likely accidents. So why don't anyone look at putting the speed limit to 100 and 50 first.
Drivers

It's not the speeding that's an issue. It's the dumb drivers that are on the road who don't use indicators or just plain and simply slow traffic for no reason. Tauranga has by far the worst drivers maybe in the whole country.
