Mount street closes amid heavy rain forecast

Adams Ave in Mount Maunganui will be temporarily closed to vehicles from 5pm today, as heavy rain is forecast to affect the region.

The closure follows geotechnical advice warning of increased risks on Mauao due to the expected rainfall, the Tauranga City Council said in a statement today.

As a precaution, the council will restrict vehicle access along the stretch of Adams Ave between Pilot Bay and the Maunganui Rd roundabout.

While the road will be closed to traffic, the footpath on the shop-side of Adams Avenue will remain open for pedestrians.

The council advises motorists and locals to expect some disruption as crews set up the road closure this afternoon.

It said the decision was a “precautionary approach” to ensure public safety, with further updates expected as MetService provides more detailed weather information.

“The road closure is temporary, and we will reopen Adams Avenue as soon as we have assurance from geotechnical specialists that the risk has reduced”, once the rain is over.

Pity

What a huge pity that the Council didn’t let the businesses, that this affects, know. There is no excuse for that. Obviously their communication skills still need a lot of work.

The Council are closing the road for vehicles but not pedestrians? If your concerned about safety surely people wouldn't be able to walk the footpaths on the same road?

laughably stupid

If it is safe for people to walk the road, it is safe for people to drive it.
Either close the whole area to ensure full safety (and really upset businesses along the road) , OR keep it open and watch (sensors on the Mount) for any hint of a potential landslip, due to the increased weather risk. Cars and people would then exit the area.
This is an overreaction to the previous tragic slips where warnings were allegedly given but no notice was taken.
You can bet, notice would be taken this time.
