Six60’s passion contagious

Heading to the Six60 concert at Brewers Bar in Mount Maunganui was a highlight of my summer break – having heard everyone rave about the band.

This is the first time I have seen the Dunedin-raised boys live and was quietly impressed with everything from the opening act to the closing tune.

Kicking the night off in style was Kiwi rapper David Dallas.

If you're going to get a packed venue full of people excited, choosing an artist as charismatic and chatty as David Dallas is one the perfect way to warm up the crowd.

On stage for nearly an hour, David, along with his band Daylight Robbery, entertained with a selection of originals and covers by artists such as Che Fu and Scribe.

Despite the popularity of original tracks it was Scribe's popular ‘Not Many' tune that had hundreds jumping.

David Dallas' allocution is awesome, and he openly explained where inspiration for most of his own songs came from, giving the audience the personal touch – as opposed to the cold and rehearsed as many do.

But moving on - 40 minutes and a few technical issues later - there was a knock on the door.

Six60's entire gig had clearly been designed to replicate a casual Friday night house party, with a large lamp and couch parked in the middle of the stage and a door off to the left.

When members' silhouettes appeared behind the door and a knock echoed through the crowd, everyone went crazy.

This is one band people were seriously excited to hear.

A unique live sound - lead singer Matiu Walters has a voice that could melt butter.

He also did a great job of interacting and conversing with the audience, taking the time to introduce every band member and flatter locals with praise for the region.

The band played all the favourites, starting off with ‘Don't Forget Your Roots', and earning massive applause with ‘Lost' and ‘Rise Up 2.0'.

From resounding drum solos to interactive singing with the audience, every second was used in what became a memorable and thoroughly impressive performance.

In fact, it was so good, the hour they played went by so fast.

I would have expected them to play for slightly longer, and the absence of an encore was noted.

Six60 is a band with such raw talent, and genuine passion for music. It leaves you wanting more.

Brewer's Bar was a great venue for such a gig too. Being reasonably new to Tauranga, this was my first time frequenting the popular music venue and I was pretty impressed.
