SH5 reopens following truck fire

Update, 5.20pm: State Highway 5, south of Rotorua has reopened after it was closed due to a vehicle fire earlier this afternoon.

The highway was closed between SH30 and Tumunui Rd due to a truck fire, with motorists advised to avoid the area.

Police thank motorists for their patience.

Earlier, 2.25pm: State Highway 5 south of Rotorua is closed due to a truck fire.

In a highway alert, NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) said the highway is closed between SH30 and Tumunui Rd.

Police advised people to avoid the area and follow directions of emergency services.

Detours are in place.

Southbound traffic is advised to turn right on to SH30 then left on to Waikaukau Rd. Turn left on to Rehi Rd then left on to Corbett Rd. Turn left on to Tumunui Rd and turn right back on to SH5. For northbound traffic the reverse route applies.

This detour is not suitable for HPMVs, NZTA said.
