Police are asking for witnesses to come forward after a fatal crash on Saturday morning on State Highway 1, Wairakei, Taupō.
“About 7.30am, two vehicles travelling on a straight stretch of road collided,” said Taupō Area Road Policing Manager Senior Sergeant Fane Troy.
“Sadly, the driver of one vehicle died.”
Two other people were transported to hospital with minor to moderate injuries.
Fire crews from Taupō district were dispatched to the scene and assisted ambulance and police, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said.
State Highway 1 closed for some time while the Serious Crash Unit remained at the site conducting a scene examination and motorists were advised to avoid the area or expect delays.
“The Serious Crash Unit has examined the scene, and now Police are asking to hear from anyone who saw the crash occur, or who might have dashcam footage of it,” Senior Sergeant Troy said.
