One person has died in a two-vehicle crash near Wairakei, Taupō, prompting the closure of State Highway 1 this morning.
Emergency services responded to the crash around 7.30am, between Link Rd and Kauri Drive.
The sole occupant of one vehicle died at the scene, while two people from the second vehicle sustained minor injuries, police said.
The Serious Crash Unit remains at the site conducting a scene examination.
State Highway 1 is still closed and motorists are advised to avoid the area or expect delays.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is under way.
Fire crews from Taupō district were dispatched to the scene and assisted ambulance and police, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said.
Two ambulances were dispatched by Hato Hone St John's at 7.32am, a spokesperson said.
“Our crews assessed and treated two patients who were transported to Taupō hospital in a minor condition.”
Road closures are in place at the SH1, SH5 and Wairakei Drive roundabout, and at Link Rd, according to NZTA.
