Update, 5.30pm: State Highway 2 has reopened following an earlier crash north of Waimana Gorge.

"This crash has now been cleared and State Highway 2 has reopened in both directions," police said.

"However emergency services remain on scene.

"Continue to expect some delays in the area."

Hato Hone St John was notified of a motor vehicle accident in Waimana at 11.27am and responded with three ambulances, one rapid response unit, one manager, and two helicopters to the scene.

“Our crews assessed and treated four patients; two in a moderate condition and one in a minor condition who were transported to Whakatane hospital via road, and one patient in a critical condition was airlifted to Waikato hospital,” it said.

Earlier, 11.45am: Emergency services are responding to the scene of a serious vehicle crash on State Highway 2 north of Waimana Gorge.

“Motorists are advised to take alternative routes due to a blockage on State Highway 2 East, between Stanley Rd and Fraser Rd, following a serious crash this morning,” police said.

Police were alerted to the two-vehicle crash at about 11.30am.

“Indications are people have been seriously injured.”

Fire brigades from Tāneatua and Whakatāne stations were also at the scene.

Motorists are advised to delay travel or take alternative routes. NZTA Waka Kotahi said a detour is in place.

Detour for eastbound traffic: turn left onto Taneatua Rd, Valley Rd, turn right onto Gorge Rd, turn right onto Ohope Rd, continue onto Pohutakawa Rd, continue onto Wainui Rd, turn onto SH2.

Reverse for Westbound traffic.

“[This detour is] not suitable for HPMVs,” an NZTA spokesperson said.

Police said SH2 will remain closed for some time.
