Palm tree stops traffic

A sighting issue has led to the removal of a large palm tree on the corner of Gravatt Road and Santa Barbara Drive in Papamoa.

The tree, removed and taken away by Arbor Care between 1pm and 4.30pm yesterday, was deemed a severe hazard by roading engineers following a traffic assessment.

Tauranga City Council communication advisor Marcel Currin says the hazard was identified when motorists were making a right turn out of Santa Barbara Drive and onto Gravatt Road.

Marcel says the removing the tree, estimated to be about 10 metres tall, was a last resort after council looked at the situation and believed it could be resolved by way of pruning.

'When there is a safety issue like that we are required to act.

'The tree will always come second to public safety.”
