Former NZ First MP Brendan Horan opened the door for Prime Minister John Key to get a laugh at NZ First Party leader Winston Peters in Parliament today.
The Tauranga-based MP was expelled from the party's caucus a week ago, and as of last night is now officially deemed to have left the NZ First Party.
Winston Peters, Brendan Horan in happier times.
But the NZ First board meeting ducked the decision, saying Brendan lost his party membership by his own action when he notified the speaker he is now to be regarded as an independent Member of Parliament.
Both men were back in the House today, where a serve from Brendan allowed Prime Minister John Key to score against Winston Peters.
Brendan popped in a supplementary question during Winston's questioning of John Key over a deal allowing easier visas to China Southern Airlines' frequent flyers.
"Does the Prime Minister agree that natural justice and due process are relevant in the administration of the Immigration Act?" Brendan asked.
The Prime Minister stated they were relevant, 'and I think it's important to be consistent when one's applying that''.
"I know that selection of people when they come to New Zealand is difficult but when there's 171,000 a year that's challenging, but when it's one of eight you'd think you'd get it right," The Prime Minister said to laughter from MPs across the House.
Brendan was one of eight NZ First MPs including Mr Peters elected to Parliament last year.
Party leader Winston Peters expelled Brendan from caucus last week amid unconfirmed allegations Brendan's been spending his mother's money. Under the party's constitution Winston's not able to terminate a party membership.
Leaked documents also allege Brendan used his Parliamentary cellphone to phone the TAB more than 100 times in the last year.
Brendan's now trying to recover the cellphone records that are the basis of allegations he overused his cellphone for TAB betting.
He says he made 14 calls a month, not 12 a day as has been claimed. He says the cost of the calls would be less than $20 and the amounts bet are no one else's business.
Many of the phone bets were made while he was watching TV with his mother, says Brendan.
They would be watching the horses, and she would say, 'I like the look of that one,” says Brendan.
He told Radio New Zealand's Morning Report programme today he is most concerned about his telephone documents being leaked to the media.
"They had people's telephone numbers on, Kiwi Rail contacts, people who rang me in confidence with massive problems that I'm working on. Their confidence has to be guaranteed.
'For somebody to leak a document with their names on is politically irresponsible.”
Winston Peters asked to see his phone records last week, and he gave him the only hard copy, says Brendan.
Winston Peters today denied being given the records or leaking them.
In Tauranga NZ First is cleaning out Brendan's former offices on the corner of Totara Street.
Where Brendan will be operating from in future is unknown.
Brendan says he's responsible to the people who voted for him in Tauranga, the people who gave him 13.2 per cent of the party vote in Tauranga.

Agree with Captain Sensible, Resign! Like the Tui Ad says "Yeah, Right." That's not about to happen. Fairly typical behaviour of someone under scrutiny, accuse someone else of something, by accusing Winston Peters of something and trying to do some political points scoring. Shows a lot about his moral integrity and lack of loyalty. The truth will come out and he should be shown the door. You can't trust him. He's just having his 5 minutes of fame. Soon he will be yesterday's news and can camp out at the TAB to his heart's desire.
Captain Sensible!!!!!

Please explain why Brendon should resign, E.G. what has he done wrong? It appears Winston can't explain why he kicked Brendon out and nobody else can either. If you have evidence to support your statement show us? if not hold back on your judgement, after all that would be the sensible thing to do would it not?
How immature

What an immature thing for a PM to say these elected officals need to grow up work together and do the job they are well paid for, not act like a bunch of Primary School kids.

Brendan, rightly (probably) or wrongly is not a NZ First MP anymore. He got in as a list MP by people voting for NZ First, not for him. He was NOT elected. He must resign and stand as an independent to try to get back in. But it is always hard to separate a politicians snout from a trough because they treat us all as fools.
