Update. 6.15pm: State Highway 2 between 11th Ave and Beaumaris Boulevard has reopened following an earlier incident on an overbridge on Cambridge Road.

Update, 5.43pm:  State Highway 2 is closed near the Cambridge Road overbridge while Tauranga police respond to an incident.

A SunLive reader says traffic is backing up along both lanes of SH2.

"The roundabout to go to [Beaumaris] Boulevard is shut. Can't come up overpass, the roundabout at Bethlehem is shut as well barricaded off," says a SunLive reader.

"Traffic is backed up all through Bethlehem going both ways [and the] underpass under [the] bridge is shut in lanes going to town.

"I have to detour down to Jonathan Street."

Earlier, 5.09pm: Tauranga Police are responding to an incident on an overbridge on Cambridge Road.

"State Highway 2 has been closed to traffic in the immediate vicinity of the overbridge," says a police spokesperson.

A SunLive reader at the scene says traffic is being diverted off Takitimu Drive onto Cambridge Road.

"Traffic is backed up to 11th Avenue bridge and down Takitimu Drive," says a SunLive reader.

"Motorists are asked to take alternative routes where possible, or to expect delays," says a police spokesperson.

"State highway 2 is closed in both directions at Waihi Rd," says an NZTA Waka Kotahi spokesperson.

"Consider delaying your journey or expect delays and possible diversions."
