5pm update: State Highway 5 has reopened following a bush fire in Waiotapu.

Police wish to thank motorists for their patience while emergency services responded.

Earlier, SH5 was closed at both ends of Waiotapu Loop Road and the Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland was evacuated as a precaution.

Earlier, 2.45pm: Emergency services are in attendance at a bush fire in Rotorua.

"As a result, State Highway 5 is closed at both ends of Waiotapu Loop Road," says a police spokesperson.

Detours are in place, and motorists have been advised to avoid the area.

The Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland has been evacuated as a precaution.
