Tauranga drivers can expect traffic delays on State Highway 29A between Barkes Corner and Oropi Roundabout, and also on Totara Street, from tonight, Friday February 9.
Completing emergency road repairs on SH29A and road rebuilding on Totara Street are the reasons motorists may need to allow extra travel time.
SH 29A Barkes Corner to Oropi Roundabout:
Due to emergency road repair works, there will be Stop/Go with 30 km per hour temporary speed restrictions in place from 6pm Friday, February 9.
This work is on SH29A between Barkes Corner Roundabout and Oropi Road Roundabout. Delays are to be expected.
Then from 11pm Friday, February 9 there will be a complete road closure of SH29A between Barkes Corner Roundabout and Oropi Road Roundabout.
Detour: Southbound traffic: Left onto Cameron Rd, right onto Maleme St, right onto Oropi Rd and back onto SH29A northbound in reverse.
The work is expected to continue until 7pm on Saturday, February 10.
Totara Street closure, February 9-14:
Major delays are expected during one-lane Totara Street closure from Friday evening, February 9.
A much-needed upgrade to Totara Street is likely to cause major traffic delays in the surrounding area. Residents are being asked to allow extra time to travel, or to consider working from home if possible. Weather permitting, road rebuilding work will begin at 8pm on Friday, February 9 and should be complete by 6am Wednesday, February 14, with contractors working around the clock to finish as quickly as possible.
The northbound lane (heading toward the Mount) of Totara Street between Hewletts Road and Hull Road will be closed and detours will be in place via Hewletts Road, Maunganui Road, and Hull Road.
To help accommodate the extra volume of traffic, vehicles can use the eastbound Hewletts Road bus lane - going toward Maunganui Road. "Totara Street is a vital and heavily used road for local industry, the port, commuters, and visitors," says a Tauranga City Council spokesperson.
"Council acknowledges the delays will be frustrating for people travelling though the affected area and appreciate your patience."
Council says the upgrade has been held off for several years while other works in the area were underway but cannot be delayed any longer as areas of this road have reached the end of life.
"Rebuilding will improve the structural integrity and safety of the road for the next forty years and doing it this way rather than resealing means it will take just four days instead of six weeks. "With the Bayfair to Baypark Link and Cameron Road Stage 1 projects now complete the Totara Street upgrade is another step toward an improved, safer, and more reliable transport network for Tauranga," says a council spokesperson. Heading north/south on state highway 2 . Isn't about time someone is held accountable for the chaos on our roads due to sealing and upgrades. Tga commuters are experiencing 1-2hrs delays. Not acceptable
Is the job finished?

They must have a different idea of what finished looks like than the rest of us. It's still a mess, unfinished, untidy, bits not working including the 35 million dollar underpass. Well, at least it was like that yesterday afternoon. I've heard of miracles but I have serious doubts about this particular one after nearly 7 years. That spokesperson needs to leave the desk and go for a tiki tour driven by the company chauffeur so they can stop and look about.
Another TCC / NZTA fail, boosted by their expensive PR dept. that they use to feed misinformation. I think they should be reported to the Misinformation outfit for that.
Totara Street

Went thru there today and saw that they are doing the other side of the concrete piece . I sure hope that they do better than last time. The Map implies that they are doing from Hewlett's road up to the roundabout. .
Sorry Paul W2

Only doing the opposite side of rd, to what was done last year. 300 metres from Ingams down to railway line.
Other 2 plus kilometres still be bouncy bouncy...
