Big addition to school playground

A drum set, xylophone and musical chime will be a giant addition to Golden Sands School's newly built playground - and to raise funds the school is holding a car boot sale on November 10.

The school, built almost two years ago, now has a playground for its new students and is raising money for a new musical garden.

School children to learn through sound, says Clare Pearson.

Event organiser and secretary of the Friends of Golden Sands Committee, Clare Pearson says the garden will help the children to express themselves through the sound of music.

'The kids will love it. It's freedom, there is nobody there to tell them how to play it. It doesn't matter if they are musical or not.”

Clare says the garden will be one of a kind in New Zealand, offering a chance for the children to be creative outside.

'They will just be banging and hitting it and then they will realise they can actually make a tune with it.”

The musical garden will complement the new playground and is proposed to be complete by next term.

Clare says the school is awaiting the arrival of the giant instruments before the garden will be complete.

The school is hoping to raise $1000 this year with all funds going towards the building of the musical garden.

Homemade crafts and clothes will be among other items sold at the sale.

A bouncy castle, sausage sizzles and a cake stall will also be available. Doors open 6.30am.
