K Valley boardwalk fire extinguished

Tauranga City Council contractors are ensuring an area in Kopurererua Valley is safe for the public to access after the popular boardwalk was damaged due to a fire.

The fire in Kopurererua Valley Reserve near Laurence Street North was extinguished by fire fighters early on Sunday morning.

Police say they attended the scene in K Valley, then immediately notified Fire and Emergency NZ.

Fire and Emergency NZ Northern Shift Manager Garreth Lewis says they received a call about the fire in Gate Pa at 5.41am.

"The boardwalk was on fire," says Garreth. "One fire truck attended."

A fire truck came from the Tauranga fire station and fire fighters extinguished the fire soon after arriving.

A SunLive reader says the fire in K Valley was near Laurence Street North.

"Fire and Emergency NZ had a bit of difficulty accessing [the fire] due to its location off Laurence Street North," says the SunLive reader.

"They soon had it under control, thankfully."

Tauranga City Council contractors have been at the scene on Sunday morning.

"We received a call from FENZ at about 6.30am, Sunday 14 January, letting us know that the boardwalk at the entrance to Laurence Street North had been damaged due to a fire," says Tauranga City Council Spaces and Places Operations Manager Warren Aitken.

"Our contractors have been on site making the area safe this morning, and we will work out what repairs may need to be made over the coming days.

"We do not know the possible cause of the fire."

Police and FENZ say they are not investigating the cause of the boardwalk fire.

At that hour of the morning surely that's got to be idiotic arson. Looks like minimal damage. Good save by Fire Fighters.

I guess that boardwalks are a hazard to nature, wildlife... hence Council wants heaps more?
