Live election updates: MPs head to parliament

The Beehive in Wellington.

MPs and party leaders are making their way back to Parliament as National starts to put plans in place to form a new government.

National and ACT together have 61 seats in a 121-seat Parliament, but under the preliminary results can't rely on being able to forge ahead with their favoured option of a two-party coalition.

Even with the extra seat National could expect to pick up in the Port Waikato by-election, the final count could shave away its thin majority, which would mean having to pick up the phone to New Zealand First.

National Party leader Chris Luxon will travel to Wellington, where inductions for new MPs will begin.

...we get a 2 or 3 party coalition from National, ACT, and NZ First, it will be WAY better than the clandestine attempt to replace democracy with tikanga, which was being attempted by the Labour, Te Pati Maori, and Green coalition. The country has voted against "co-governance", 3 waters, and He Puapua; the Crown will be the government. Now we need to work together to ensure that the governance is fair for ALL Kiwis, that everyone has an equal voice and opportunity and you will get help based on your NEED, not based on your ethnicity or who you know. This election has shown that we can be a truly diverse nation (with over 200 ethnicities), all of them preserving their culture, language, and religions, with true respect for ALL, and without "classes" of citizen based on your ancestry. We can be a model for the World.
