Members of the Tauranga community are gathering today to mourn the passing of former Tauranga City Councillor Bill Faulkner.
Bill was a prominent figure in local politics and infrastructure development, who unexpectedly passed away at the age of 76 on Monday, August 7.
The memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 1pm, at the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club at Sulphur Point.
Born on October 17, 1946, Bill was widely recognised for his unwavering commitment to the community and his advocacy for ratepayers' rights. Friends and family remember him as a dedicated family man, an accomplished sailor, and a passionate advocate for Tauranga’s quality drinking water.
His contributions to local politics spanned decades, and he directed his attention to steering the council towards focusing on its core values. Bill's involvement in local body politics began with his 'Fair Go for Ratepayers' in the early 1980s, leading to his lifelong commitment to advocating for the ratepayers' interests.
Bill's legacy is evident in various infrastructure projects he championed, including the development of Tauranga's water supply system, which became a model for the country. His dedication to securing high-quality drinking water has been lauded by former colleagues.
The legacy he leaves behind reflects his dedication to ensuring the city's growth was balanced with the needs and affordability of its residents.
His love for the sea was deeply rooted, with his early years on Matakana Island sparking his passion for sailing. His leadership on and off the water earned him respect, as he continued to captain his yacht 'No Regrets' until the end. His contribution to sailing competitions and his dedication to his fellow sailors will be remembered fondly by those who shared his passion.
As the city comes together this afternoon to honour his memory and celebrate his life, Bill's family, friends, and the community at large are reminded of his exceptional contributions and the lasting mark he left on Tauranga, the city he loved.

There are always people who think that others should pay more rates so the city could have more flash amenities. Bill being smart set up a separate rates donation account that remained open for a long time. My recollection is that it barely reached $50.00. So much for the give me's and I want it now crowd. Just were not prepared to front up with their own cash. Like Brian from the Sun Newspaper, kept our minds on the job at hand and restraint in wasteful spending.
City pioneers both.
