NZRL is pleased to announce the appointment of Blake Ayshford as the National Game Development Officer for the Bay of Plenty District as part of the wider Ngā Ringa Āwhina team.

With a focus on maximising participation, particularly among rangatahi; Blake will play a vital role in delivering high-quality programmes and initiatives to enhance the rugby league experience for players, coaches, and the wider Bay of Plenty community using The Kiwi Way.

Ayshford’s professional playing career spanned ten years, rising through the ranks of the Sydney Roosters junior system.

Making his NRL debut with the West Tigers, Ayshford represented the team from 2006 to 2013. Following his tenure with the Tigers, he briefly joined the Cronulla Sharks in 2014-2015, concluding his career in New Zealand, playing for the Warriors until 2019.

After retiring, Ayshford found a home in Papamoa and remained closely connected to rugby league by actively engaging with the Upper Central Zone Stallion’s under-20s and Men’s national championship campaigns, which achieved notable success.

During this time, Ayshford’s developed a passion for New Zealand grassroots rugby league.

As a part of the Ngā Ringa Āwhina team, Ayshford will collaborate with zone, districts, clubs, and schools to attract and retain players and coaches with a particular focus on rangatahi.

“I have been so lucky to call rugby league a job as it has given me so much; my passion is to give back to the kids, the clubs and the game,” says Ayshford.

“I’m passionate about introducing newcomers to rugby league and fostering their enjoyment during the learning process.”

NZRL community & programmes general manaher Ani Cherrington says, they are thrilled to welcome Ayshford to the team as a National Game Development Officer for the Bay of Plenty District.

“With his background, passion for rugby league, and dedication to fostering inclusive participation, we are confident Blake will make a significant impact in the Bay of Plenty.”
