An school girl with a 'heart of gold” has raised more than $7000, so far, by putting a ready salted Bluebird chip on Trade Me.

Not just any chip, this crispy potato has a heart-shaped hole in the middle, says 10-year-old Bianca McPherson, who found it while tucking into a bag.

Instead of chomping into the chip like many of us would, Bianca excitedly ran to her mother.

At the heart of it, she wanted to do something heart-felt with her heart-shaped treasure, to support children who might need help with their own hearts.

The Aucklander, and her mother Sacha, placed the chip on Trade Me, and already it has reached $7200 with just under week to go. The auction closes 8pm, Tuesday, July 18.

All the proceeds will go to the Starship Foundation, the charity raising funds for Starship Children's Hospital.

Bianca says she was stunned by the discovery. 'I couldn't believe it; I've never seen a chip with a heart-shaped hole in it before!”

'The winner will receive the chip, currently being safely stored in a Glad ziplock bag,” the ad on Trade Me reads.

One auction watcher says the young girl has a heart of gold for thinking outside the square.

'I am very proud of your daughter for not only doing such an awesome, brilliant, caring thought for Starship hospital.”

Another hungry auction watcher went for the gag.

'Hi, apart from the heart shape, are there any other chips or scratches on the chip? Do you have any other color options? Do you have one with a smiley face instead of a heart?” they asked.

How did the heart come to happen?

Toby Smith, Production Manager for Bluebird, says to make chips, potatoes need to be cooked under intense heat.

'The very high heat we cook our Bluebird potato chips at can sometimes turn a small hole in the raw potato into a bigger hole, and that's what Bianca has discovered here.

'It's very special that Bianca has made this find. While we do see these holes from time to time, a perfect heart shape is very rare.”

Bluebird general manager Michelle Cassettari says she and the Bluebird team are extremely touched by the kindness and generosity of Bianca.

Bluebird will be matching bids for Bianca's chip dollar for dollar, up to the value of $10,000.

'To be so giving and thoughtful of others at such a young age is incredible. We were so taken by Bianca's generous spirit that we wanted to show our support for what she's doing.

The Trade Me auction for the chip with the heart-shaped hole closes on July 18 at 8pm.
