Should a stadium be built at Tauranga Domain?

Tauranga City Council wants to know what you think about a proposed community stadium at Tauranga Domain.

A community stadium proposed for Tauranga Domain will need good support from the home crowd and a convincing gameplan to make it over the line.

A preliminary business case for the proposed stadium, led by Western Bay of Plenty economic development agency Priority One, was presented to the Council on May 1, 2023.

The proposed stadium would be a multi-use facility accommodating the community, clubs, local cultural events, festivals, professional sports, and commercial concerts, and is predicted to bring many social and economic benefits to the city.

Weighing up the potential benefits and costs

However, Tauranga City Council Commissioners want a better understanding of the potential benefits and costs, and to gauge initial community support before deciding whether to proceed any further.

'Funding options are still being explored, however a proportion of the funding would be likely to come from rates,” says commissioner Stephen Selwood.

'A community stadium at Tauranga Domain would support our city centre aspirations, but we need to weigh up its potential benefits and costs, and the views of the community, especially at a time when the cost of living is front of everyone's mind and we've already committed to investing in other much-needed projects such as Te Manawataki o Te Papa – the Civic Precinct, which will help drive a significant revitalisation of the city centre.”

While further work is underway to answer those questions, supporters, detractors, and those wavering on the side-lines, are being asked to share their initial feedback by taking a community survey before July 21, 2023.

'It's early days and no decisions have been made yet, so we really encourage everyone to get involved and share their thoughts,” Stephen says.

A community stadium has been proposed for Tauranga Domain.

What happens once you've shared your feedback

After considering initial community feedback, as well as the wider economic and social benefits and proposed funding options, commissioners will decide whether to proceed any further, which could see the proposal included in the draft 2024-34 Long-term Plan community consultation process.

Community consultation on the draft 2024-34 Long-term Plan is expected to take place in November, which would provide a further opportunity for everyone in the community to share their feedback, before a decision on the proposed community stadium was made.

The bigger picture
Council's spaces and places manager Alison Law says whatever happens with the proposed stadium, council staff will continue to work with organisations currently located at the Domain to ensure their needs are met, now and in the future.

'We're committed to working with all the groups involved so we can address any potential opportunities and challenges together.

'This includes identifying future options for possible relocation of some sports groups as part of a broader project to make better use of our community spaces, and so that we are prepared if the stadium does go ahead.”

Council ignorant to local opinion, particularly when they suggest that the wider (non ratepaying) community be included in decision making. But if all of these "vital" community events are to be focused on the domain, what is the future for the racecourse...? Ratepayers should be the sole arbiters of council activities and not a sporting body or those with selfish interests.

How many times does the Commission have to ask for feedback to realise that nobody wants to change the status quo of the domain. Shadow1

stop wasting our money on feelgood community projects we DON'T need and use it in fixing all the issues that aren't being dealt with. And dump Anne Tolley while you're at it, she's the biggest financial liability of all.

Seems this keeps raising it's head . The answer is absolutely No. We have much higher priority problems and no need to further congestion in the area. It seems that bringing the subject every week that they will plough on regardless. Bring back democracy . Get rid of commissioners and the government whose ideology drives the ruin of Cameron road

We have done Submissions, surveys but they will do what they want. No need for it, save money for important stuff.

Yes!!!

So long overdue and so desperately needed! You know we've missed a trick when the likes of Nelson and New Plymouth have hosted All Blacks tests and we don't even HAVe a stadium. But it's not just those marquee games obviously. It's getting regular games for BOP Steamers, Chiefs, Warriors, Phoenix, etc. And that's just the men's teams. Plenty of growth opportunities in the women's games. Then there's concerts and other events. It's an absolute no-brainer. Ignore the naysayers and crack on!!!

The Business Case...

Posted on 12-07-2023 13:10 | By morepork

... is seriously flawed and makes assumptions that are arguably unwarranted. I have some experience with preparing and evaluating Business Cases and this one is "good in parts". There is no consideration for where the predicted 8000 people will park, for example. The issue is not so much about whether Tauranga should have a stadium, it is really about whether we should build one NOW, and WHERE it should be located. The Business Case dismisses the location issue by referring to a previous study, which I couldn't find. I believe the current Domain serves a variety of interests, including individuals who want a space to train and are not necessarily part of any Club. It is a green space that should remain so, with access to all. There may be a case for a stadium, but I don't believe it should be in the Domain and have voted accordingly.

I don't think that your argument requires more than a few moments of consideration, particularly when the same arguments were used in the debate about whether or not to fund the multimillion dollar white elephant that is the "Bay Oval". You're more likely to see dogs than cricketers during the cricket season and extremely likely to see parking enforcement officers because even in that area, there just isn't enough parking space. How many empty stadiums, dressing rooms, galleries and reserved grass areas do we need to pay for. Are councils there to fund empty spaces or to support the DAILY activities of the resident population.

Christchurch example

Yes google Christchurch stadium for a business case $683 million . An extra $150 million over run on building already for ratepayers . Stadiums are not a good revenue maker and research will show running costs beyond any return n

Stadiums are a drain on tax payer money, no stadium ever covers it's own costs. we already have a perfectly good stadium with good parking, plz use your common sense!!!

Yes.

Include a full Speedway track, Drift circuit, catered music venue, all the things some folk are trying to quash - and the things Council are suggesting be shutdown at Baypark. Put them all in the city where everyone cane enjoy the sounds and the access. BtW - forget that 10,00 pm curfew. 12.30 am for 49 nights of the year… With My Best Wishes, Bill.

Parking Not A Problem

Posted on 13-07-2023 06:35 | By Thats Nice

When and if this goes ahead and is completed, you won't need to worry about where to park because cars will be practically banned lol by then or made that difficult that you won't even bother going to the stadium. You'll all be made to hop on buses.

Bad thinking

Posted on 13-07-2023 08:50 | By CliftonGuy

If we HAVE to have a new stadium, then build it on a greefield site on the outskirts of the city where there is access to public transport, parking availability for those further afield and close to the motorway for ease of access. Putting a major facility such as this in the centre of the city is nonsensical. The traffic backup at present is bad enough. Why make it worse?

Asking but doing what you like anyway

Just another article to post what they will be doing in the guise of being a question. The un-elected are there to do whatever they want, you can suggest anything as long as it agrees with them. Sounds familiar aye, just like govt. You can have any opinion as long as it agrees with us.

As someone who lives close to the City, I endorse the points you made. The One Love concert was bad enough. I used to get out of town for the weekend when that was on (and I wasn't the only one...). It has been postponed due to Covid and the promoters have seriously tried to make it acceptable to local residents, with some success. I stayed home during the last one and I think I was inconvenienced for a total of about 10 minutes and only when the wind was in a certain direction. I think thousands of people should be able to enjoy themselves, and I don't want it cancelled. But the location is simply wrong. Once a year we can deal with it and just get over it, but with a stadium? The Business Case claims that the stadium will raise local property values; it won't.

Local Businesses.

Posted on 13-07-2023 11:58 | By morepork

The Business Case was written by Priority One. It is hardly unbiased. They make much of the fact that events at a Domain stadium will help CBD businesses. That's undeniable, but I contend that those businesses also profit when events are held over a weekend, out of the Domain. People come to "have a look around Tauranga" if they are staying over for a night or two to attend an event, even if it ISN'T held in the Domain. I am persuaded that the Domain is serving a very good purpose and is retaining some easily accessible green in a growing city. We should value and protect it.

NO

Definitely NOT in that location. It would be an expensive disaster.
