Work to remove eight large trees from the Pilot Bay side of Mauao is set to begin on Wednesday, which will help ensure the preservation of the landmark's "unique archaeological terraces".
To maintain public safety during the process, a full closure of Mauao is scheduled from 5am Wednesday, June 21, to 5pm Friday, June 23.
"Trees will be removed using a helicopter to minimise damage to the land below, similar to works undertaken in 2022," says a Tauranga City Council spokesperson.
"To maintain public safety, several closures are required next week while these works are carried out:
"The Pilot Bay boat ramp and car park will be closed from 7am Tuesday, June 20, until 5pm Monday, June 26.
"Pilot Quay entry from The Mall and Adams Avenue will be closed to all traffic during this time.
'These closures may potentially finish earlier, depending on progress of works. In the event of bad weather, this work may be shifted to another suitable date.
"While these closures take place, it provides an opportunity for our community to explore some of the other fantastic walking tracks available across the city. Read more here.
"During this time, please access Tauranga harbour from other boat ramps. Find a list of alternative local boat ramps on our website."
