Tauranga residents in the Bethlehem area are warning other road users of the "slippery" conditions on State Highway 2 between Judea and Bethlehem Road, which they say could cause motorists to "lose control" of their vehicles.
This comes after a crash was reported in the area on Friday evening.
One SunLive reader says the accident is not the first, and probably won't be the last.
"The top of the asphalt has been ground off, to form a non-slip surface on the corners, but only between the two fog lines, the one on left and the one next to the barrier on the right.
"This has resulted in a lip, a few cm high, on the inner edge of the fog line. So if a car's wheel goes even 1cm over the line which we all do at times on corners, they then hit a small ledge and lose control.
"It will happen many times, if something isn't done."
Another SunLive reader reported on Friday they had a near miss in the area earlier in the week.
"The road is incredibly slippery. I came through on Wednesday at normal speed and as soon as I got to the part where they've taken off the top layer my wheels started slipping. Scary.
"Had to take it quietly and the second piece of roading I got to was the same. Today right where that crash was, the road is still stripped of its top layer and is very slippery."

Check your tyres

I have traveled this road, wet and dry and including this portion with the top roughed up, for more than twenty years. Since the wire median barrier was installed a few years ago I have wondered in amazement that in perfect dry conditions it is destroyed during the day or night time. I concluded it must be driver error. Hold the steering wheel with both hands, leave your phone alone, concentrate because there are hidden queues even in the middle of the day. And I suggest you call into your tyre shop, get them checked and pressures checked too. I have never felt my car slipping through there
