An outpouring of frustration and anger about traffic on State Highway 2 is evident on social media this morning.
Motorists have been taken to Facebook and messaging SunLive to voice their growing annoyance over growing traffic delays on the highway that stretches from Katikati to Tauranga.
One person says they left home in Katikati at 6.55am on Wednesday and only just made it to Bethlehem by 8.55am.
"It's blooding ridiculous. Something needs to be done."
This morning, people say the Wairoa Bridge, which was closed overnight for construction works on a new cycle way that is being installed along the highway, was 55 minutes late being opened.
"The bridge was supposed to open at 5am. Only just opened at 5.55am," says a motorists who messaged SunLive on Facebook this morning.
Traffic management and speed restrictions are currently in place near the Wairoa Bridge as construction on the last 800m of the Ōmokoroa to Tauranga cycleway, which will enable safe cycling on the narrow strip of State Highway 2 between the Wairoa Bridge and Bethlehem.
Tauranga City Council and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency have warned that these works are expected to be in place for a number of months.
Traffic congestion on SH2 is nothing new though, with motorists reporting anywhere from 40min to 2 hour long delays on the highway over the last two years.
A mother of two who travels along the highway regularly each week says there has been road works on SH2 for at least two years now.
"I think we are all just exhausted. We might have been able to handle this recent lot of works, if we had had a break from the last lot. But it has been continuous for two years, with no end in sight."
In a statement released earlier this month, NZTA says the agency is aware that significant delays on SH2 are causing frustration.
'SH2 is an incredibly sensitive piece of road and any work near or on this road is seeing changes in traffic flow,” says Rob Campbell, Regional Manager of Maintenance and Operations for Waka Kotahi.
'The pressure on this road has been felt for some time. From what was once a rural road passing through a few settlements, it has developed into a busy commuter and freight route.
'The main cause of the current congestion appears to be the sheer volume of traffic putting pressure on the network. There has been increase of more than 6000 vehicles per day added to this corridor in the last 10 years.
'Another contributing factor is an apparent shift in commuter habits. Our traffic data analytics show that people are staggering the time they travel on SH2 so we're seeing a shift in peak travel, which used to be 6am-9am, is now more like 6am - 10-10.30am.”
A map showing where the works are taking place.
Work underway between Wairoa Bridge and Bethlehem:
The work underway since Sunday, May 14, is part of the Waka Kotahi annual maintenance programme. It's a major rehabilitation of State Highway 2.
The work is being completed at night and includes completely rebuilding and asphalting the road surface between the Wairoa Bridge and the Bethlehem roundabout.
The remaining night-time road closures are:
Sunday 28th May (new)
Light vehicles will be detoured via Wairoa Road, Crawford Road and Poripori Road, through to State Highway 29. Heavy vehicles will be stacked either side of the bridge and piloted through at set intervals.
Between the nights of the closures, up to and including Thursday, June 1, night works will continue between the Wairoa Bridge and Bethlehem under Stop/Go traffic management.

Utter contempt

NZTA & the councils need to stop treating the people that use this section of road with an attitude of disregard & contempt. "Whoops - Sorry" is NOT good enough when it is taking 2 hours to drive from Katikati to Bethlehem. They say the stupid cycle path work is "off-road" so why is it taking weeks to put down a new layer of tar seal in the resurface? Someone needs to take some responsibility and fix this s**t show!!! Not just screw over thousands of people trying to get to & from work, then chuck in a half assed, non-sincere, excuse riddled apology.
Stop this insanity now

Forget and STOP this cycleway until the new Northern Link is finished. This project would not have been a problem if this inept government hadn't pulled the pin on the Northern Link in 2017. The building of this cycleway [I'm a cyclist] is destroying peoples lives, kids late for school, people late for work and medical appointments etc. Where is the government's cost to benefit analysis review. Last but not least have these dumb nuts thought of the extra cost for transport and huge increase in pollution caused by sitting in traffic. Thanks Labour for this abhorrent situation you have caused, well done for causing this devastating mess!!! I hope people reflect on this when voting in the upcoming election.
Its not just the traffic volume

Until the cycleway work started the queues were back to loop rd, now they back to Pahoia. If peoples travel habits have changed the peak would be longer but lower. Dont try to con us just get on, finish the work and be rid of the cones. Why is this work being spread out so far time wise?
Why?

1. Why does the cycleway not stay on the same side of the State Highway where the refuge lane is on the above photo instead of going under it and then back over it at great cost? 2. Why does NZTA think that commuters spreading their journeys over an extra hour in the day causes more problems? Surely the same number of cars over a greater time period helps congestion?

You don't have to be one to state the obvious that the traffic volumes have increased in the last ten years. That is no answer to poor planning and scheduling with no regard to the users.

2hrs from aongatete to Bethlehem 6-8am . 1hr late for work. Who ever left such a drop from old to new asphalt should be sacked

This idiocy of spending millions on cycleways when we don't have an adequate public transport system has to stop. For most of us there is no alternative to using a car to get to work shops etc. A huge amount of money was spent on the Totara St cycleway including traffic lights to further disrupt traffic and the majority of cyclists still use the main road for their commute.

I think you said it all. I don't know of any other place in the world (and I have lived in many) where this would be tolerated or even happen. In the 21st century computer simulations can show what will happen before any asphalt is poured. Different solutions can be compared and evaluated BEFORE the stupidity manifests itself in disruption. There seems to be an attitude of infallibility in the planning and a lack of concern over the time it will take to implement, in the execution. It's a disgrace and no wonder people are angry about it.

The ONLY reason why cycleway doesn't stay on same north side of SH2 as cycle bridge & run up as a straight line exit into Carmichael Rd is because TCC & NZTA did a private deal with Wairoa Marae who objected to this happening (NIMBY) after originally approving it. No consultation with other parties was allowed despite being requested for 2 years. Rob Campbell featured in story told 2 representatives of Bike Tauranga they "did a deal" with Wairoa Marae to get some other concessions on other roads nearby (read TNL) . Its got nothing to do with better safety of cyclists or considering already clogged traffic which when road work finishes will also be stopped in its tracks every time a bike needs to cross over. NZTA & TCC spent another $5million creating this chaos to suit themselves. Time to sack Rob C NZTA & Brendan Bisley TCC
Management of SH2

Current congestion caused by sheer volume of traffic say NZTA - the volume of traffic on SH 2 has been building up for years and NZTA just keep passing excuses. It would perhaps serve motorists better if the management of SH2 was taken away from NZTA and a new Highway's Agency set up, manned by professional road management personnel.
sinking
Posted on 25-05-2023 13:11 | By dave4u
With the traffic and the weight of trucks just sitting on the road I notice that the road has sunk between 50 to 100mm in places which is like driving on a roller coaster now when the road is clear also the green trees are wilting on the side of the road from exhaust emissions.

So folks, here we all are in a situation where the lunatics have quite clearly taken over the asylum! Question is does anyone have a plan for how normal, practical thinking people can take back control?

Chaos

I drive a delivery truck on SH2 between Omokoroa and Town. The new curbing and channeling as you head down to the bridge from Bethlehem has completely blocked the turning lane into Taniwha Pl so traffic wishing to turn now have to do so from the main stream rather than be ing able to turn safely out of the main traffic flow. A bizarre change!

I was shocked to read your post, but it rings true. We have watched Democracy being eroded by this government and this is just another example of something that should have been transparent, and subject to community discussion, being carried out covertly and resulting in what we are seeing. When we allow one section of the community to use back door tactics and the Administration complies, we are really beyond help. I reluctantly agree to the conclusion in your last sentence. (Reluctanctly because I'm not convinced the replacement will be any better...)

It will be a long process because established mindsets need to be changed. Start by changing the government. The Commissioners are bound to implement their policy (or funding will be withheld). Change the PC mindset so that NO-ONE is above scrutiny or needs to be propitiated. Enforce transparency and open discussion on all issues that affect the whole community. Replace civil servants who demonstrate incompetence or lack of respect for "Other People's Money" (OPM). Like I said, "it will be a long process".
